WHAT'S THE DIFFERENCE: PAPER TAPE AND FIBERGLASS SELF ADHESIVE TAPE
Most drywall installations fall into two products: paper tape or fiberglass tape. Most seams can be glued together with either, but before you start mixing compounds, there are important differences between the two that you need to know.
Types of Drywall Tape

Because paper tape is nonstick, it must be embedded with a layer of joint compound to stick to the drywall surface. This is easy to do, but if you accidentally cover the entire surface with compound and then squeeze it out evenly, air pockets will form under the tape.
While grid tape can be used on the inside corners, paper is easier to handle in these locations because of its middle crease. Paper is not as strong as fiberglass mesh; however, it is inelastic and creates stronger joints. This is especially important at the butt joint, as this is often the weakest part of a drywall installation. Paper tapes can be used with dry or set compound.
Fiberglass self-adhesive tape
Fiberglass mesh tape is self-adhesive, so it does not require an embedded layer of compound. This speeds up the bonding process and ensures that the tape will lie flat on the drywall surface. It also means you can tape all the joints in the room before you apply the first coat of composite. Although stronger than paper belts under extreme loads, mesh belts are more elastic, so seams are more prone to cracks.
The mesh belt should be covered with a fixed type compound which is stronger than the dry type and will compensate for the greater elasticity of the fiberglass mesh. After the initial coat, both types of compounds can be used. For patches, where seam strength is not as important as a full patch, mesh tape can be repaired more quickly. Manufacturer-approved for the use of paper tape in paperless drywall, but gridded paper tape offers the best protection against mildew.
