Welding Blankets vs. Fire Blankets: What's the Difference?
What is an electric welding blanket? Welding blankets protect the welder and the surrounding area during welding. It consists of a layer containing expanded vermiculite, flexible protective material and inorganic heat-resistant fiber material. These layers maintain the strong structural integrity of the blanket. However, due to the different welding techniques, there are different classes of welding blankets. Welding blankets can be made of various materials such as silicate, aluminum paper, polyurethane, graphite, clay and other coverings that are preferred according to technical characteristics. Some welding blankets are available for horizontal or vertical applications, or single or double sided and, provide protection for high or low intensity welding work or cutting techniques. Some blankets can also have higher capacities, such as thermal insulators or electrical insulators.

What is a fire blanket? A fire blanket is a safety device used to extinguish an incipient (incipient) fire. It is made of a layer of flame-retardant material that is placed over a fire to suffocate it. Most fire blankets in kitchens and homes are made of fiberglass. They fold down into a quick release for easy storage. These non-flammable blankets can stop fires up to 150°C to 1200°C. Fire blankets are great for emergencies. This is because they are designed with a quick release feature.

For welding jobs, fire blankets are usually made of high temperature fiberglass fabric. Fabrics can be uncoated or coated. They prevent dross from welding or fabric cutting applications. Use a welding heat blanket and place it in direct contact with the welding material to gradually reduce the temperature of the welding object. This is done for best weld quality. A special mineral, such as vermiculite, does the job with a high degree of insulation. On the other hand, welding fire blankets are used to repel sparks, slag, and molten metal from welds. They also act as insulation for debris. Depending on the welding environment, they can be used vertically or horizontally. Welding blankets and fire blankets are designed not only to protect welders from spatter and sparks, but also to protect against fire and high temperatures.
