How to Mud Drywall (Including Drywall Tape and More!)
How to Tape and Mortar a Wall
1. Apply joint compound to joints, working one joint at a time and spreading with a knife. The seams should be completely covered with additional seam compound, with a little buildup on top.
2. Place drywall tape over the joint compound you just added.
3. Secure one side of the tape (with your fingers or a second knife), then move your knife along the entire length of the tape to hold it firmly in the mud.
4. Flip over the drywall tape with more joint compound. Smoothes the application across the seams.
5. When you plaster drywall, you have to let the grout set before proceeding. Check your drying time at this stage and let it dry.
6. Using a drywall hand sander, sand where you used drywall tape and mud. It's messy.
7. Wipe the wall with a sponge or vacuum cleaner.
8. Next, use the 12" knife to apply a second coat of grout. All coats after the first are the same. You just spread some grout along the seam, then use the big knife to lightly smooth the seam and widen it Mud area. This helps to taper the drywall so it covers the seam well in the middle and then gets thinner the farther away from the seam.
Repeat this process until your seams look good. We walked three times.
