It's a complaint we hear almost daily: "Fiberglass mesh joint tape just won't adhere." Yet in more than 90% of cases, the tape is not the culprit – the surface preparation is. Without a properly prepared substrate, even the highest-grade adhesive cannot form a durable bond.
Surface Contamination
Oils, dust, and mould-release residues are invisible to the eye but devastating to adhesion. Silicone-based release agents, in particular, can reduce peel strength by up to 70%. A simple solvent wipe (acetone or IPA) before application removes these contaminants and restores the surface's natural reactivity.
Moisture
Water molecules compete for the same active sites that the adhesive needs to wet out. Even microscopic condensation on a cool substrate will create a weak boundary layer. Always ensure the surface is thoroughly dry – and if you're working in humid conditions, allow extra drying time after cleaning.
Loose Oxides and Friable Coatings
On metals, aged composites, or previously painted surfaces, a loose or powdery outer layer prevents mechanical interlocking. A light abrasion (120–180 grit) followed by re-cleaning removes this fragile film and provides a fresh, micro-roughened anchor pattern for the adhesive.
Low-Energy Plastics
Substrates like polyethylene, polypropylene, or powder-coated finishes have low surface energy. Here, a dedicated primer or flame treatment is mandatory – not a luxury. Skipping this step means the adhesive will sit on top rather than bond with the surface.
