Inside corners – where paper tape shines.

See that pre‑creased line right down the middle of your paper tape? That's not packaging waste. Fold it lengthwise, and you've got a perfect 90‑degree channel. Spread compound on both sides of the corner, press the folded tape in with a corner knife, and it beds perfectly. The crease keeps the tape centered. No wandering. No wrinkles.

Here's a pro trick: don't soak the tape. Just apply it dry into wet compound. The crease holds the angle while the compound locks it in. One pass, let it dry, then a thin second coat. You'll get a sharp, clean inside corner that paint loves.

Outside corners – don't even try with paper tape.

Paper tape has no backbone. Wrap it around an outside corner, and it just flops. You can't make a crisp, impact‑resistant edge with a floppy piece of paper. That's why outside corners get corner bead – metal, vinyl, or paper‑faced metal. Corner bead gives you a hard, straight edge that won't dent when someone bumps into it with a ladder.

Could you use paper tape on an outside corner? Technically, yes. But it'll look round, soft, and chipped within a month. Don't do it.

What about mesh tape on corners?

Mesh tape is even worse for outside corners – zero rigidity. For inside corners, mesh doesn't have a crease, so you'll fight to keep it straight. And mesh needs more compound to hide the pattern, which adds bulk and slows you down. Stick with paper tape for inside corners. Save the mesh for flat seams
