Technical Parameter Interpretation Of 140g Imported Wet-Strength White Kraft Paper For Plasterboard Paper Jointing Tape

 

There are two common basis weights for drywall joint paper on the market: 130g and 140g. 130g is the standard option, sufficient for most indoor flat joints with high cost performance. 140g is known as "reinforced grade" – with 10 grams more of high-quality imported wet-strength white kraft paper fiber per square meter than 130g, meaning higher density and better tear resistance.

 

But basis weight is only superficial; what truly determines the service life of the tape is wet strength. According to the national standard JG/T 298, qualified tape shall have a dry strength ≥ 6.98 kN/m and wet strength ≥ 3.6 kN/m. The actual measured wet strength of 140g imported wet-strength white kraft paper can reach above 4.2 kN/m, nearly 17% higher than the national standard. Why is "wet strength" so critical? Because the tape must be embedded in wet joint compound to bond – if the paper's strength drops sharply after absorbing water, it will easily delaminate, blister or even break during drying and shrinkage. Wet-strength white kraft paper adds special wet-strength agents to the pulp, keeping fibers tightly bonded even in a wet state, like a rope that becomes firmer in water.

In short: 130g is sufficient, 140g is more reliable. For ordinary residential projects, 130g is fully capable; for high-end decoration, large-span ceilings, or any project where rework is unacceptable, spending a few extra cents to upgrade to 140g brings long-term peace of mind.
