Key Application Tips For Plasterboard Drywall Tape

Too thick? Your tape will starve.

You know how it goes. Stiff mud, you lean into the knife, press the tape down – and squeeze almost all the compound out from underneath. Now your tape is sitting on a nearly dry bed. Looks flat. Feels flat. But there's nothing locking it in. Few weeks later? Crack right down the seam. And thick mud loves to trap air. You think you got the bubble out. Nope. It'll pop up after drying like a little pimple on your perfect wall.

Too thin? Your tape will swim.

Water it down too much, and the compound loses its grip. Tape slides around when you try to bed it. Wrinkles show up. And when that watery mix dries, it shrinks hard – pulls the tape tight and leaves hairline cracks on both edges. Thin mud also won't bite into the tape's rough surface or the drywall paper. Sand it once and the tape peels up like a sticker.

So what actually works?

Think smooth peanut butter – not crunchy, not drippy. When you scoop some on your knife, it should hold for a second, then slowly sag. When you bed the tape, a tiny bit of mud should squeeze out around the edges. That's the sweet spot. Tape is fully wet, but not drowning.
