Innovative Application Of Glassfiber Mesh in Structural Strengthening And Energy Retrofit Of A Historic Building

The solution was a thin, internally applied insulation system. After carefully removing deteriorated internal plaster, a lightweight insulating base coat was applied directly to the original masonry. The key innovation came next: embedding a high-tensile, alkali-resistant mesh into the base coat before applying the final finish. This mesh did more than prevent cracking-it distributed structural stresses across the entire wall surface, effectively "stitching" micro-cracks in the old masonry and preventing them from propagating. The original facade remained untouched, while interior wall surface temperatures rose by an average of 4°C, eliminating cold spots and condensation. 

Conventional steel reinforcement would have been too rigid and prone to corrosion; standard polymer meshes lacked long-term durability in the alkaline cementitious matrix. The mesh offered the perfect balance: high tensile strength, complete alkali resistance, and enough flexibility to accommodate the old building's minor movements without fracturing. It also allowed the system to remain thin-under 25mm total-which was critical for preserving original window and door reveals. 

Two years after completion, the building has shown no cracks, no delamination, and measurable energy savings of over 30%. The historic facade remains exactly as it was-unchanged, unburied, and protected. For the preservation team, glassfiber mesh proved that modern performance and historic character are not opposites. They are partners, when the right innovation connects them.
