So you've got a bubble or a crack in a finished seam. Don't panic. And don't just smear more compound on top – that never works.

Step 1 – Cut out the bad spot

Take a sharp utility knife and cut right down the center of the bubble or crack. Then make two more cuts, one on each side, about an inch away from the center. Peel off the loose tape and compound. If the crack runs a long way, cut out the whole damaged section – don't try to patch a short piece.

 

Step 2 – Clean up the mess

Scrape away any loose, flaking compound. Sand the edges of the repair area with 120‑grit so there's no hard ridge. Vacuum the dust. The surface should feel clean and solid – no crumbling edges.

 

Step 3 – Re‑tape the joint

Spread a thin coat of compound over the repair area, about 2 inches wider than the missing tape on each side. Cut a fresh piece of joint tape long enough to cover the repair plus an extra inch on each end. Press the tape into the wet compound, starting in the middle and working outward to squeeze out air. Scrape off excess compound. Let it dry overnight.

 

Step 4 – Build back the coats

You need three thin coats, just like a new seam.

Coat 2 (next day): Use a 6‑inch knife, spread compound about an inch past the tape edges. Feather the edges. Dry overnight.

Coat 3 (day after): Switch to a 10‑inch knife. Spread a very thin coat, feathering out 4 to 5 inches on each side. Dry overnight.

 

Step 5 – Sand and blend

Lightly sand with 150‑grit or 180‑grit. Use a sanding sponge or pole sander with a bright light raking across the wall. Sand just until the edges disappear and the surface feels smooth to your palm.

 

Step 6 – Prime and paint

Don't skip primer. A good drywall primer seals the fresh compound so it doesn't flash through the paint. Then apply your topcoat – two thin coats are better than one thick one.

 

Pro tip – match the texture

If the rest of the wall has texture (knockdown, orange peel, etc.), save that for after priming and before painting. For a smooth wall, your sanding should leave the repair invisible.
